The Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, which is one of the largest and finest of its kind in the country, was established in 1956. This 29 sq. km. of marshland is home to over 360 species of birds which makes it special. Now officially declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, Bharatpur used to be a part of the private shooting reserve of the Maharaja of Bharatpur. Other animals found in the park are Spotted Deer, Sambhar, Blue Bull, Black Buck, Jackal, Fishing Cat, Wild Cat, Hare, Mongoose and Monitor Lizard.
