About this activity

On this full-day tour from Boston, climb to the highest peak in New England on the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway — the Mount Washington Cog Railway. The railway combines 19th-century innovation with 21st-century, eco-friendly biodiesel technology. It is the only cog railway east of the White Mountains. During this day trip, travel over Jacob's Ladder, the second steepest trestle in the world with a 37.41 percent grade. The engines and coaches are designed and built at the Cog by its crew of talented machinists and craftsmen.

The train ride will take 45 minutes up to the summit and 45 minutes back down to the bottom of Mount Washington. Atop the summit, explore Mount Washington Observatory’s Weather Museum, the 1853 Tip-Top House and the Sherman Adams Visitor Center — or simply admire the panoramic view.

After the cog railway tour, go fruit picking — a fun activity for the entire family. Pick the strawberries, cherries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, apples, pumpkins, and more in their harvest season. If the fruit picking farms are not open on the travel day, the group will visit the tax-free Merrimack Outlet instead. After a fun-filled day, the tour will conclude back in Boston around 7pm.

Please note that Mount Washington Cog Railway tickets are not included in the tour price and will be purchased on site.
