Bucharest Jewish Heritage Tour

During this tour you will discover the most important Jewish monuments that survived Ceausescu's demolitions and learn the history the people that raised them. 
Bucharest had one of the most prosperous Jewish Community, almost 11% of Bucharest Population was represented by Jews in the inter-war period. The events of the Second World War but also the migration to Israel transformed the community starting with the 1950s. Today the community is pretty active and started to take care of the heritage that survived till today.
The tour will start in Unirea Square in front of Manuc Inn, the oldest inn in town. From this point we will enter the small Jewish quarter. Our first stop is the Holy Union Temple that hosts the History Museum of the Romanian Jews. You will have the chance to see the Great Polish Synagogue, one of the biggest synagogues in town. This was build in the second part of 19th century by the Polish- Jewish community and today hosts the Holocaust Museum. Another stop will be the Jewish State Theater, one of the first professional Jewish theater in the world. You will also discover the freshly renovated Choral Temple, that had its public reopening just this year. 
For architecture lovers, we have prepared an exploration into Art Deco, Modernist and Bauhaus buildings built between the wars by famous Romanian-Jewish architects such as Marcel Iancu or Jean Monda.
But perhaps the best part of this tour is the walk on the charming streets of the Jewish quarter. No other part of the city has the charter and the nostalgic feel of this beautiful but often forgotten neighborhood.
