his tour is for bird lovers, birdwatchers and for those who just want to be amazed by nature. Let’s just start by saying that Colombia has the greatest avian biodiversity in the world because 20% of all bird species on earth can be found here, that is exactly 1,889 species besides the 197 species of migratory birds that are temporary residents. What we love about this place is that it doesn’t feel like a zoo. Many kinds of birds are actually free, and large-scale walk-in cages allow close contact with the birds. This makes the aviary unique.
On this tour, you will go to a very important and special place, The National Aviary of Colombia. This is a conservation organization that simulates 4 different ecosystems. Most importantly, they are highly interested in species preservation; therefore they promote knowledge about Colombian diversity, its sustainable use, and its responsible management through the use of animal welfare practices.
The tour starts when we come pick you up at your hotel at either 8:00 am or 2:00 pm (depending on the departure time you choose) from which we will drive the island of Barú where the Aviary is located. Once there you will be able to appreciate the 138 bird species. The tremendous job that this Aviary has done to replicate the different ecosystems, has been crucial to preserving the species and what is most important, to facilitate their reproduction. Besides the large area and gigantic walk-in cages they have opened for visitors, they have a research and reproductive program for endangered species like Harpy Eagle, Andean Condor and the Blue-billed curassow.
As soon as you finish the tour, we will take you back to your hotel so you can enjoy the rest of your stay in Cartagena.
