About this activity
Journey 15 km outside the city and up to one of the highest points in the area to visit the temple of Wat Prathat Doi Suthep, the most sacred temple in Chiang Mai. Exercise your heart, body and soul by ascending 306 steps to the temple which is guarded by two magnificent nagas (serpents). Constructed in 1383, this symbol of Chiang Mai contains the holy relic of the Lord Buddha which is enshrined in a magnificent, glowing golden pagoda. Take in fantastic views of the entire city and the surrounding areas as seen from the temple grounds. Walk around the grounds of Doi Suthep past golden pillars, six foot gongs and rows of bells. A five-tiered parasol made of gold sits on display in the inner courtyard. The beautiful Wat Prathat Doi Suthep can be seen from miles away. Continue by local truck along a bumpy mountain road to visit the White Hmong hill tribe village. Enjoy this scenic route. Witness migrants from China, wearing gorgeous embroidered clothing, who prefer to live in isolated and self-sustaining villages which preserve their primitive culture and ancient customs.
