About this activity

Explore the remote villages of the Peruvian Andes and fabled Sacred Valley of the Incas on a combined 4-day bike and hike tour. Discover hidden settlements high in the forest, and enjoy optional activities, such as a rafting trip on the Urubamba River. Learn about the legendary Inca civilization, and meet the present-day inhabitants of this dramatic landscape with local dinners and overnight stays in rustic accommodations.

Day 1: Cusco - Santa María - Pispitayuc (Biking)
Start your adventure by crossing the Sacred Valley of the Incas to marvel at the breathtaking scenery of the Peruvian Andes. You will climb to an altitude of over 13,400 feet (4,000 meters) to bike downhill through the cloud forest, passing small villages, fertile fields, and rivers en route. Stop for lunch in Huamanmarka, then continue to the village of Santa Maria, where a 2-hour optional rafting activity in the Urubamba River is available for thrill seekers. Enjoy dinner with a local family in Pispitayuca.

Day 2: Pispitayoc - Santa Teresa (Trekking)
After breakfast with the local family, start your 30-minute climb, marveling at the indigenous wildlife and native plants en route to the tiny village of Quellomayo on the Yellow River. Continue to Santa Teresa for an indulgent soak in the thermal baths, and soothe away your biking and hiking aches and pains.

Day 3: Santa Teresa - Aguas Calientes (Trekking)
Today’s 5-hour walk takes you to the dramatic hydroelectric plant of the Urubamba River. Visit a ceremonial center to learn more about life in the Machupicchu Pueblo, before hiking along the railroad to the village of Aguas Calientes. At dinner your guide will brief you about tomorrow’s guided tour of legendary Machu Picchu.

Day 4: Machu Picchu
Rise before dawn to travel by bus to the fabled ruins of Machu Picchu. Watch the sunrise over the majestic mountains before the start of a 2-hour guided tour. Learn about the Inca city, abandoned after the Spanish Conquest of Peru, and see famous constructions, such as the Temple of the Sun, and Intihuatana (Hitching Post of the Sun). You will have some free time to wander among the magical ruins of Machu Picchu on your own, before taking the scenic train back to Ollantaytambo for a bus transfer to Cusco.
