Stop At: Puka Pukara, Cusco Peru

Puka Pukara means “red fortress” in Quechua, most likely named for the high iron content of the limestone rocks. The site dates to the reign of the 9th Inca ruler Pachacuteq in the mid 1400’s. It’s believed to be a military complex due to its commanding view overlooking the Cusco valley and Tambomachay. Or it might have functioned as an administrative center, or even a resting place for travelers. Again, just like so many other Incan mysteries, no one knows for sure. It’s sort of a jumble of stones here, not very symmetrical, giving rise to the theory that the site was constructed in a hurry. Most interesting is how the Incas built walls over the rocks. If the weather is clear, you’ll have a great view of the valley
