Why Watch The Phantom of the Opera

Webber’s Phantom of the Opera has won over 70 major theatre awards over three decades since it opened in London’s West End in 1986. It won an Olivier Award shortly after its opening and went on to win a Tony Award for Best Musical when it featured in Broadway in 1988. The Phantom of the Opera is the second longest-running musical at the West End and the single longest-running musical in the history of Broadway. Lloyd Webber approached Maria Bjornson to design the sets and costumes, and Alan Jay Lerner to help with the lyrics. The creative team managed to successfully convert the original book and film into one of today’s most recognised musicals. The show at the Dubai Opera promises to have all the elements of the original, including fantastic compositions such as ‘The Music of the Night’, ‘All I Ask of You’, and ‘Think of Me’ besides the sensational ‘The Phantom of the Opera’.

The Story

The Phantom of the Opera is based on Gaston Leroux’s classic French novel ‘Le Fantôme de l'Opéra’ that was first published as a series between September 1909 and January 1910 in a daily newspaper. A phantom haunts the underground labyrinth below the Paris Opera House and is enamoured by Christie Daae, a beautiful soprano who performs at the Paris Opera. The phantom is a former musical genius, and is passionately in love with Christie owing to her talent. Christie, however, has already lent her heart to another man. What ensues is a dramatic sequence of events fuelled by jealousy and passion.
