About this activity
Experience a Gaelic Games session operated at a local Gaelic (GAA) club called "Na Fianna" which is located only about ten minutes bus journey from the city centre. The venue is a modern facility, which includes a dedicated visitor centre. There are two bus public routes (number 4 and 9) which stop directly across the road.
All the sessions commence with an introduction to what are known locally as "Gaelic Games". During this you will be told some history of the games, their revered place and relevance to life in Ireland and how the games are structured and played. You will see lots of video clips, share the Irish passion for the pastimes and generally have a chat with participants, getting to know them and getting them involved.
Following your induction to the ancient Irish games, it is out to the all weather pitches, where you'll get to partake in some gentle team building activities of Gaelic football, hurling and Gaelic handball.
All you'll need is flat footwear (maybe tracksuit) and a willingness to have a bit of fun. Casual sports clothing is preferable. Bring sporting attire if you think you'll get competitive. There is water available throughout the session plus tea and coffee. There are dressing rooms/showers on site, so if you wish you can avail of these but please bring your own towels and toiletries.
It's the interaction that makes the event: all the trainers are great, they are passionate about the native Irish games and really interact with visitors. Depending on the group you most likely play mini-matches - nothing too serious and all in good fun, as the first priorities!
