The islands get their name from the Greek word elafos, meaning deer because their reefs and bays are spread so as they ramified deer horns and in ancient times the islands were apparently home to a large deer population. Situated close to the Dubrovnik waterfront the Elafiti islands are an excellent place for both blissful relaxation and tracing the rich history of Dubrovnik.

There are thirteen larger and smaller islands but only three of them are inhabited: Koločep, Lopud and Šipan. Covered with lush Mediterranean and subtropical vegetation the islands are paradise for visitors interested in nature and for those interested in history there are many churches, monasteries, fortresses and summer residences built between 9th and 16th century.

The beaches vary from island to island, though all of them have clear turquoise waters. Lopud and Koločep have true sandy beaches, very shallow ones perfect for children and for playing all sorts of water sports. Lopud's Šunj beach is the most famous but the busiest one so if you want enjoy the peace you can always find your own little Robinson Crusoe beach. Elaphite islands (Šipan, Lopud, Koločep) are all accessible by speed boat from Dubrovnik. A simple wander to observe the old towns and architecture is a must. Take advantage of your very own schedule and make a stop where you like to check out different places. Many of the beaches are backed by well-equipped promenades that are nice spots to have lunch or a drink, or you could look for a quiet cove away from the busy beaches for excellent swimming and snorkeling.
