About this activity
Itinerary

Your class will be in a small group (max. 2 people) in our beautiful Victorian home in central Edinburgh. Lessons begin with your instructor Ray giving a brief background to his fascinating UNESCO-recognised Garifuna culture, which has a history intertwined with Africa, the UK, France, the Caribbean, Central America and beyond.

You’ll then learn how to hold and strike your large “Segunda” drum. He will show you a basic rhythm, then he will play alongside you on the Primero drum. He will also sing a traditional song while you play. You will learn traditional rhythms including Paranda, Punta and Chumba.

Garifuna drumming is dynamic, exciting and quite different to the better-known African djembe rhythms, thanks to the fusion of African & Amerindian history. Lessons are adapted to your skills and experience - from total beginners, to professional percussionists. Ray uses fun, hands-on methods that anybody can learn from.

Ray is an experienced teacher and former drummer, dancer & singer with the Belize National Dance Company. He has performed around the world, and loves sharing his culture with others. His big smile, patience, friendliness & teaching skills make him a perfect guide.
