About this activity
The hills around Carmignano, which have been home to the Etruscans and the Medici, are filled with vineyards. This wine region has been much loved by winemakers for centuries as the soil always produces a fruitful yield.
Carmignano is an Italian wine region located in Tuscany and centered on the city of Carmignano, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northwest of Florence.
Wine has been produced in the Carmignano region since Roman times. During the Middle Ages, the area was widely reputed for the quality of its wines.
The Carmignano production area was chosen by the Grand Duke Cosimo III de’ Medici, in 1716, as one of the 4 wine growing areas of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
In the 18th century, the producers of the Carmignano region invested a tradition of their own, blending Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon, long before the practice became popularized by the “Super Tuscan”.
The reputation of Carmignano continued to grow with Queen Anne of Great Britain requesting regular shipments of the wine. Our small-group wine tour runs in full comfort (travelling in peace) with our wine expert and guide, who will give a comprehensive introduction to the region and its wines. We will tour the vineyards and wine cellars in the heart of the Carmignano, giving an up close look at the production and ageing process of the wines and also learning about the secret of extra virgin olive oil making.
