About this activity
Florentine gold is more than wearable, like the jewelry on display in Ponte Vecchio shops, it’s also edible, in green, black, and white, and on this four-hour small-group culinary tour beginning from Piazza Santa Maria Novella at 5:30pm and including wine, food tastings, and dinner, you’ll learn why.
As you taste your way through some of Tuscany’s finest delicacies, your foodie guide will explain how green gold is for extra-virgin olive oil, and black and white golds are for truffles (which are tubers, not mushrooms). Your food expert guide will explain the notes and flavors of Tuscan Chianti and Carmiganano wines paired with bruschetta featuring black truffles, sun-dried tomatoes, and extra-virgin olive oil. You’ll learn why Tuscany is one of the few regions in Italy where truffles are found, giving them their rarity and high price tags. You’ll then walk through the Florentine high-fashion district, visiting a cafe that dates back to 1885, where you’ll relax over a glass of sparkling Prosecco Antinori, which will pair well with sandwiches filled with truffles, salt, and pepper sauce, delicate foie gras, and wild-caught salmon. The journey continues as you walk through the historical center of Florence toward the Arno river and across the Ponte Vecchio bridge for a photo opportunity. In the Oltrano, you’ll stop at a local favorite shop to sample the finest green gold, extra-virgin olive oil, in the city. Your knowledge of the region’s ingredients will be the perfect conversation starter as you meet Chef Vary who will welcome you into her home for a multi-course feast featuring the famed green, white, and black gold celebrated throughout the day. Please note: The chef’s home is not wheelchair accessible. Your culinary adventure ends at about 9:30pm in the Oltrano.
