Stop At: Royal Abbey of Cong, Cong Ireland

Walk in the footsteps of Ireland’s Last High King Rory O’Connor in the beautiful ancient ruins of the 12th century Royal Augustinian Abbey of Cong. Travel back in time with our local guide to the everyday life of an Augustinian monk and marvel in the incredible Gothic and Romanesque architecture and stone work.

The magnificent Ashford Castle estate is set in 350 acres, on the picturesque shores of Lough Corrib. Ashford Castle is steeped in over 700 years of history, from the invading Anglo-Norman De Burgos in 1228 to the current owners, the Tollman family. Our local guides will astonish you with stories and tales as you stroll through the grounds and the gardens.

Stop At: Lough Corrib, Ireland

Enjoy a lake cruise on Lough Corrib with Corrib Cruises. Corrib Cruises is a family run passenger boat service on Lough Corrib, operated by Cong brothers Patrick and David Luskin. During the months of October to May the tour group will take a 1 hour History Cruise of Lough Corrib on The Isle of Inisfree from Ashford Castle Pier. During the months of June to September the tour group will board The Isle of Inisfree at Lisloughrey Pier and embark on a 2-hour cruise of Lough Corrib which includes a stop at Lough Corrib’s biggest island Inchagoill where the boat’s Captain Patrick Luskin will take you on a tour of the island where you will see 5th and 12th century churches and learn of the incredible history associated with the island.

Stop At: Pigeon Hole Cave, Clonbur Road, Cong Ireland

The Pigeon Hole or ‘Poll na gColum’, is a cave located just outside of Cong. It is one of the most renowned and easily accessible caves in the area. A flight of 61 limestone steps leads down to the mysterious mouth of the cave, opening up a large chasm to those who dare with a stream connecting the nearby Loughs. In the winter time, the eerie sound of the water rapidly flowing through the cave may be mistaken for the wail of a Banshee. One of Cong’s most famous Fairy Tales is associated with the Pigeon Hole, ”The Fairy Trout” but we’ll leave the telling of that ”Tale” to our local guide.
