Big Island Hike to Molten Lava

About this activity

Meet your guides in mid-afternoon at their private property near the town of Kalapana. Please eat a meal, bring two liters of water, and dress appropriately for your round-trip hike.

To get to the molten lava, you will hike 1-2 miles (1.5-3 kilometers) gravel road and 1.5 - 3 miles (2.5 - 5 kilometers) over uneven solidified lava fields. These are approximate distances due to the changing nature of the lava flow.

As you head toward the ocean through the lava field, expect to see glowing plumes of molten lava set against the backdrop of the sunset and the darkening sky until finally reaching the 50-foot cliffs where the lava empties into the Pacific. This is a once-in-a-lifetime sight for adventure seekers and nature lovers. Please note that the tour is only able to go to the lava ocean entry if it is safe. If not, the tour will go to the surface flow where you can poke a stick in lava, which is a priority.

You'll be provided with walking sticks and flashlights for hiking in the dark.
