About this activity

Understanding the historical evolution from the ancient Greek world to the Empire of Byzantium (and furthermore into the medieval ages) is no small feat — but you’ll have all the help you need at Athens’ glorious Byzantine and Christian museum. With more than 25,000 artifacts in display, ranging from the 3rd century CE to the 20th century, this museum will make for one diverse morning. From there, we’ll head out to a nearby church which just so happens to be one of the oldest churches in the city. It is estimated that the Kapnikarea church was built some time in the 11th century, perhaps around 1050. As it was common with the early Christian churches, this one was built over an ancient Greek pagan temple dedicated to the worship of a goddess, possibly Athena or Demeter. It also happens to be right in the middle of the high-traffic shopping area of Ermou Street, so you may also grab a few shopping items on the way back.
