About this activity
Arrive at 11am for lunch, or 6pm for dinner, and meet your hosts, a mother-daughter team who love to share their culinary and cultural traditions with travelers. Rochani is a college student and Manju is a homemaker who makes sure every ingredient she uses is hand-picked and every spice blend is mixed at home. Their home in Old Baneshwor, about 20 minutes from central Kathmandu, was built by Rochani's grandfather.
Step into the kitchen and learn to prepare a traditional Nepali meal, based on recipes from Manju's grandmother, who cooked for the king of Nepal. Together you will cook two to three dishes as you learn about their family's culinary traditions, their heritage, and life growing up in Nepal. You will then share the meal you helped to prepare at the family table: Nepalese food is vegetarian-friendly, and vegetarian options are available on request.
Your meal might include any of a range of Nepali vegetable dishes, from sauteed greens to mixed achar (pickled and spiced vegetables), badam bhatmas sadeko (marinated peanuts and soy beans), tarkari (mixed vegetable curry), or dried pea masala. Classic dishes like momo (dumplings) and dal bhat (black or yellow lentils with rice) won't be left out. On the meat front, you might enjoy Nepali chicken curry or choyla (marinated red meat in a spicy onion-tomato gravy). Desserts on offer include gajar ka halwa, based on carrots.
You'll leave with new recipes, an amazing cultural perspective, and an unforgettable experience of Nepalese life after discovering true home cooking in an authentic local home. Lunch finishes at 2pm and dinner at 9pm.
