About this activity
Visit: Palazzo dei Papi, Piazza San Lorenzo 10, 01100, Viterbo Italy

Raniero Gatti had the palace built as an enlargement of the Curia building as well as a large audience room, the 'Conclave Hall', where the first and longest conclave in history was held.

Another characteristic of the Papal Palace is the Benediction Loggia (also called Papal Loggia) erected in 1267. The pope would bless the crowds from here when he left the Conclave Hall. On December 27th, 2014 the beautiful Gualterio Hall was opened to the public for the first time.

This entirely frescoed room with coat of arms of Pope Clement VII (1592-1605) was commissioned by Bishop Sebastiano Gualterio of Orvieto (1551-66).

The itinerary includes a visit to the Conclave Hall, the Papal Loggia, Gualterio Hall and Sacristy in the Cathedral of San Lorenzo. The ticket includes entrance to the Museum Colle del Duomo.
