About this activity
In the 12th century, Portugal became a nation, and the first Jewish communities appeared in Lisbon. But in the 15th century, King Manuel I enacted a law that prohibited Jewish people from departing Portugal, and he force them to convert to Christianity.

You will begin your visit at the place where the Saint Catholic Inquisition burned thousands and thousands of Jews that refused to accept the Christian faith in the bonfires of the Square of Rossio in Lisbon.

Visit the Synagogue Shaare Tikva (own expense), as well as the cemetery which was built when the Jewish settled into Lisbon. The first to be buried in this cemetery was Jose Amzalaga, who died on February 26, 1804.

Please note: The Synagogue Shaare Tikva is closed on Fridays. If you choose to book a Friday tour, then more time will be spent at Sintra where you will have longer to explore the many monuments which are there.
