About this activity
Upon leaving the dock, we’ll pass by the old town Lisbon with its historic monuments like St. Jorge’s Castle, which has been built around the X – XI century – a time when Lisbon was an important muslin harbor. Lisbon’s Cathedral, formerly known as The Church of St. Maria Maior, can also be seen in this part of town. Its construction was ordered, in 1150, by Portugal’s 1st King, D. Afonso Henriques, on top of the old muslin mosque. Another historic monument that can be seen is the National Pantheon where important historical figures, like presidents, writers, and even the beloved Portuguese fado-singer Amália Rodrigues, are buried. Before heading back to Belém we pass by Expo ’98, site of the 1998 World Fair: The theme for that year was “The Oceans: a Heritage for the future”.
