Why Watch Betrayal

As part of Pinter at the Pinter series, the revival of the cult classic Betrayal is a hotly anticipated play, with Tom Hiddleston being announced as the lead. Betrayal is a very unique play staged by the Jamie Lloyd Company; the narration follows a reverse chronological style starting from 1977, through a series of defining events and leads back to 1968. Director Jamie Lloyd is in charge of bringing the full length play to life. It is a part of a tribute to the late playwright, Harold Pinter’s 10th death anniversary. With a cast that includes stellar talent, such as that of Zawe Ashton and Charlie Cox, the play is set to be the crown jewel amongst the tributes to Harold Pinter.

The Story

This particular tale of an extramarital affair is reminiscent of something that took place in the life of the playwright Harold Pinter. It is the 70s and Robert and Emma are leading happy lives, but all of that is soon to come crashing down after a revelation that Emma has been having an affair with Robert’s best friend Jerry for the past 8 years. In a story that unravels the intricacies of marriage and extra marital affairs, the play takes a unique approach in its narration. The play opens with the marriage breaking down in 1977 and traces its way back to 1968, proving to be a comprehensive exploration of the various forms of betrayal in a marital relationship.
