The Plaza de Ramales is an urban space created between 1810 and 1811 in the Madrid of the Austrias as San Juan square by the church of the same name, considered the first one to be built in Madrid, in the twelfth century.

In 1841 it took the name of Ramales in memory of the battle of Ramales, fought in 1839 and that faced the Elizabethan general Espartero with the pretender Carlos V de Borbón, during the First Carlist War.

The painter Diego Velázquez was interred in the disappeared church of San Juan.
