About this activity
This tour will take you to one of Colombias must-see attractions, to the immense rock La Piedra de Guatape also known as El Penol the stone or simply La Piedra. Merely a one-and-a-half hour drive away east of Medellin the rock is located right next to the Penol-Guatape Dam, close to the border of the towns Guatape and El Penol. More than 200 m (650 ft.) high, the massive 10 million-ton monolith is visible far from the distance. Being almost entirely smooth there is only one wide crack all the way down from the top to the bottom. This crack was used to build a masonry staircase into it, making it possible to climb the rock and cherish the view from the top, breathless after managing 649 stairs not only because of the hike but of the incredible view! Getting off the bus we are ready to start our hike up to the top of La Piedra where well have time to relax and marvel at the 360 view over the beautiful lake and its magnificent surroundings. On the small platform we will also be able to buy a snack and a cold beverage as well as little souvenirs from the vendors. Back at the bottom of El Penol we'll board a boat on Guatape Lake to have a closer look at the environment and capture its beauty from another angle. We will also get to hear the story about the letters G and U imprinted on the north side of the rock, telling us about two cities claiming El Penol as their own. The next part of our tour includes visiting the gorgeous colorful town of Guatape. Walking down the cobblestone streets of the laid-back town of Guatape well take our time to admire the decorative panels at the base of the houses, each with a different theme chosen by the owner of the house. In Guatape well also get a delicious meal in one of the nice restaurants with traditional dishes including the areas best ingredients. After a good hike, a boat trip and a walk through the town of Guatape well return to the bus and will be on our way back to Medellin.
