About this activity

The island of Sicily is home to a mix of natural resources, seven UNESCO heritage sites, art, culture, literature, traditions, myths and a wonderful embrace of colours. Here you'll find locations, world-famous for their position and their centuries-long history, marked by numerous dominations, each of which has left its own unique legacy. Montalbano Elicona is a small but unique town and a perfect example of what Sicilian heritage is all about.
Your tour will start from Messina from where you'll leave with you tour staff and drive along the Tyrrhenian coast; your guide will describe the villages that you'll cross and the Aeolian Islands that you'll see from the bus.
Once in Montalbano you'll be taken to a local small cheese factory where you'll be given a small tasting of the famous “provola di Montalbano” – a spun paste cheese made with cow milk. You'll then continue with the tour of the town: walk through the narrow medieval streets and discover the most prominent monuments – the Church of Saint Catherin, the Church of Saint “Niccolò il Vespro” and the stately Castle, created on a pre-existing Arab-Byzantine fortress to defend the village, in a territory crossed by ancient military and commercial routes.
At the end of your visit you'll stop in a restaurant located at the back of the castle where you'll have the opportunity to taste typical products like local cheese, salami, sweets and wine.
Lastly, you'll be taken back to Messina where you'll stop in one of the panoramic spots of the city: from here you can admire the historical centre, the Ionian coast and the mainland.
