About this activity
Mexico’s pre-hispanic market tradition continues shaping today's social relationships that are mirrored in a diverse array of food, beliefs and aesthetics. On this walking tour, you will visit three markets which will cover food, flowers, and witchcraft. You will explore the different traditions and practices embedded in Mexican culture.

You will meet your guide at Mexico’s central Plaza “Zócalo” which once housed the upscale market “El Parián” where luxury products from Asia entered Mexico’s cultural mosaic. From there, you will head to the flower Market “Jamaica” and learn about Mexico’s prehispanic flower tradition as well as the ritual and medicinal purposes of flowers. Then, you'll visit the witchcraft market and learn of aspects of African, European and Prehispanic religious traditions. Last but not least, you will expose your eyes, nose and palate (if desired) to the diverse culinary traditions that have inspired Mexican cuisine by visiting a food market.
