From Mumbai to Elephanta: An Excursion

With two conical hills emerging from its centre, Elephanta is an island only accessible by (motor) launch boat. About two-thirds up the height of the two hill lies the excavation site for which Elephanta is celebrated.

Scholars suggest that the Rock Temples on these hills, that are decorated with a large number of beautifully carved sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses can be dated back to the 8th century. The exterior of the main cave consists of a columned verandah 30 feet wide and 6 feet deep, preceded by steps flanked by sculptured elephants. This tour will provide you with an adventurous and picturesque experience of this island.
