Stop At: Elephanta Caves, Mumbai India

After morning pickup from your Mumbai hotel, airport or sea port, set off for the Gateway of India. Board your boat for the 1-hour ferry ride across the harbor to Elephanta Island. There, explore the World Heritage-listed Elephanta Caves, ancient cave temples that were carved out of rock that date to the fifth century. The rock-hewn temples honor the Hindu god Shiva and contain many intricate sculptures. Walk or take the tram the short distance from the jetty to the cave temple, and climb 120 steps to the plateau where the massive cave complex is located. Upon entering a spacious hall supported by large pillars, see a large three-headed Shiva sculpture, the main attraction on the island. Of the seven cave excavations in the Elephanta group, Cave One is the most impressive with its Brahmanical rock-cut architecture and exquisite sculptures. After touring the complex, return to the ferry for the trip back to the mainland. Your tour ends at approximately 2pm with drop-off at your original Mumbai departure point.
