0730 hrs: Pick up from Nairobi hotel

Depart for Karen Blixen Museum located on the outskirts of Nairobi on Karen road. Its history dates back to 1914, during the First World War, with the arrival of Karen Blixen from Denmark. At the foot of Ngong Hills, Karen Blixen established herself as a farmer. Blixen is best known for Out of Africa, an account of her life while living in Kenya, and for one of her stories, Babette’s Feast, both of which have been adapted into Academy Award-winning motion pictures. She is also noted for her Seven Gothic Tales, particularly in Denmark. Blixen was considered several times for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

After her departure in 1931, the suburbs retained the commemorative home of Karen.

Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

This sanctuary is an inspiring elephant conservation project set-up by Daphne Sheldrick to protect these creatures against ivory trade. It was established in memory of the famous Naturalist and founder Warden of Kenya’s giant Tsavo East National Park in which he served from 1948 until 1976.A visit here helps support the vital work of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

This place is open from 11am to 12 noon where visitors can witness the ellies go about their routine and how they get fed with bottled milk. There is a keeper who will give a talk about the elephants, their origin, how they are getting on, and how some of the previous orphans are progressing. You will also see some of the youngest nursery inmates, covered in blankets to protect them from the fierce African sun.

The orphanage also takes in rhinos and if you’re lucky, you can see a young one up-close!

Lunch will be at the Karen Blixen Coffee House Restaurant (Tamambo)

Giraffe Center

In the afternoon, we visit the Giraffe Centre where you feed the friendly Rothchilds Giraffe. This is probably the most up-close as you’ll ever get to this towering creatures. The Giraffe Centre is a Non-Profit making organization whose main objective is to provide conservation education for school children and the youth of Kenya.

Kazuri Beads Factory

Kazuri Beads and Pottery Centre provide a great visit to buy original souvenir from self-help women project where hand-made ceramics and jewelries are produced. They produce brightly-colored, handmade ceramic jewelries, which are sold all over the world. It supports literally hundreds of disadvantaged Kenyan women, by providing employment and healthcare services for them and their families.

This is also the beautiful farmhouse where Karen Blixen lived between 1914 and 1931, until she left Kenya after a series of personal tragedies.
