About this activity
It is not sensible to shop on an empty stomach in our opinion, so our Made in Delhi shopping tour will begin with some deliciously spiced Indian rolls from our favourite joint at the market. It’s one of the oldest food vendors in the area and boasts a fascinating back story that has helped it to become a magnet for in-the-know celebrities and locals since 1972.
Once you’ve had your fill of Indian hospitality, we’ll head over to a locally owned fashion store to check out their impressive collection of readymade kurtis, beautiful stoles and kurtas for men. Here you will observe the tailors at work and admire their old-style stitching techniques. If you wish to try anything on or have something made up for you, there will be a little time to do so.
On our way to the next stop, we’ll stroll through the sprawling buzz of the main market, stopping off to showcase some of the best artisan products on offer.
We’ll arrive at an emporium inspired by Gandhi’s encouragement of his people to build and maintain village industries that supported local workers and artisans. You will find exquisite Indian fabrics, intricate sarees and other traditional fashions here, all of which support the local weavers and other nearby village industries. The store also offers a unique collection of organic cosmetics which makes it stand out from the rest of the market.
Handicrafts, handmade bags, purses, jewellery and colorful umbrellas are next on our shopping list. We’ll trawl the stalls, stopping at some of our favourites and chatting to a few local vendors, including some local refugees who skilfully create jewellery from old coins. Your guide will give you a few hints on how to haggle if you see anything you fancy.
Last but certainly not least, it wouldn’t be a proper tour in India if we didn’t visit a temple. Hanuman is one of the oldest temples in the country and quite possibly one of the five temples of the Mahabharata.
Outside the temple, you will meet a local henna expert, discover more about this ancient art and get a design painted on your hands, which will take about 10 to 15 minutes.
After that, your shopping journey through the market of Delhi is complete. We hope you picked up some memorable souvenirs alongside unforgettable memories! Choose to continue to explore the market on your own or get a tuk tuk to the metro stop with your guide. Before you go, don’t forget to ask for recommendations on what else to see and do in Delhi.
