Stop At: Garden District, St Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70130-5968

Originally conceived as the American sector after the Louisiana Purchase, the Garden District was intended to rival the exclusive Creole elegance of Esplanade Avenue, where the newly arrived Americans were not welcome to reside among the city’s French-speaking natives. Today, sprawling oaks and beautifully tended gardens surround dozens of opulent residential masterpieces, many of which date from the early 19th century. The district is also home to chic boutiques and trendy restaurants along the vibrant Magazine Street, as well as the world-famous Prytania Theatre. Among its most famous residents are those who rest in Lafayette Cemetery #1—a uniquely non-segregated, non-denominational necropolis, and the scenic backdrop for countless tales of mystery in literature and on the screen.
