New York: Drink Like a Local

About this activity

We visit three bars on the crawl, for approximately 30 minutes each, plenty of time to purchase and enjoy a beer, cocktail, or soda.

The first stop is an old-time bar with only two kinds of ale (light or dark) and sawdust on the floor. It was a “Men Only” pub, only admitting women after legally being forced to do so in 1970. Their motto is “We were here before you born” and they are pretty much right since the place dates back to 1854.

The second bar, named for Irish writer Jonathan Swift, is a favorite of bartenders across the city, in part thanks to its 4 a.m. close time, even on Christmas Day.

We end at a bar named after a beer originating in England, the owner’s favorite beer when he first opened for business, and the location of a botched murder-suicide attempt back in the 1800’s.

This combination walking tour/pub crawl is given on weekday afternoons, before the crowds pour in.

Other Highlights:

  • Grab a pint in New York’s oldest “Irish” tavern
  • See Manhattan’s most haunted house
  • Hear about the Bowery's infamous Suicide Hall
  • Drink in a pub with more than 300 international brews and pew-like seating.
  • Walk the cobblestone street where a scandalous relationship ended in murder
