About this activity
Visit: Musee Gustave Moreau, Paris, Ile-de-France

Established in the artist’s family home, the museum was completely fitted out by Gustave Moreau (1826-1898). In an unchanged museographic display, the newly restored ground floor presents hundreds of paintings, sketches and studies, as well as a room housing many watercolour treasures. The first floor rooms are laid out in the style of a small sentimental museum, where family portraits and works of art offered by his friends, Théodore Chassériau, Eugène Fromentin and Edgar Degas, hang on the walls. The second and third floors are occupied by huge studios presenting several hundred paintings and watercolours. More than four thousand studies in fold out panels on the walls offer a large overview of the techniques and themes of the artist, who was the undisputed master of French Symbolism. In the large showcase on the second floor, fifteen original wax figures are exhibited, modelled by Gustave Moreau himself. In relation to his paintings, they bear witness to his little known activity as a sculptor and are equal in quality to those by Edgar Degas. A unique house-artist’s studio in Paris, the Gustave Moreau Museum has preserved all the magic of its original atmosphere.
