About this activity

In private group of 7 people, you'll leave Paris with your guide to reach Fontainebleau Palace located just 1-hour ride away.

Once upon a time deep down in a forest young king Clovis met a pagan god Belen. Belen, a powerful god, predicted Clovis's great destiny, his important role in his country's history, and the Christianization of his people. Clovis got baptized and converted people who were living on his lands. The legend says that as a sign of blessing the god gave to the king three white lilies, which became the symbol of France. On the place where the king met the god there appeared the Belen fountain and the palace was built. This palace became the symbol of French kings, the testimony of their power made in stone.

The palace was being built many centuries. Starting from the Middle Ages every king took it as his responsibility to make a contribution to its decoration. This is why the styles and the plan of the palace would differ in course of time. But generally speaking the architectural complex is very harmonious and beautiful.

The palace's interior is extremely rich, and this is why it was loved so much by the kings and their famous favourites. The best sculptors, painters, and artists of their time worked on building and decorating the palace. You will see the best works of Fragonard, Bouchet, and Watteau, will enjoy their sophisticated masterpieces. You will also visit the Yard of Farewell and get to know the story of famous horseshoe stairs where Napoleon said goodbye to his army and to his power after his defeat in Russia in 1814.
