The combined trip from Chumphon Train Station to Tao includes a ride by coach to Thung Makham Noi Pier where you will switch to the Lomprayah high speed catamaran.
Cruise further to Koh Tao without stopovers en route and get dropped off at Mae Haad Pier on Koh Tao from where you can easily grab a taxi to your hotel.
