Stop At: Seven Bridges Winery, 2303 N Harding Ave, Portland, OR 97227-1740
{Seven Bridges or another nearby winery with similar wines; opening hours vary}
Saving the best for first? In some ways! Our first stop is an urban winery that focuses on wines grown in the hotter climates of the Columbia Valley AVAs -- Eastern Washington and Oregon. While many wine makers from the Willamette Valley focus mostly or even exclusively on Pinot noir, the urban wineries are not so tied to the geography of the vineyards within a stone's throw of the winery space. All wine grapes must be imported from vineyards in the region; and a few more hours' drive yields great differences in the heat and elevation of the vineyard properties. You'll have the opportunity to taste "big" Bordeaux, Rhone, Italian and Spanish wine varieties from a winery that our local wine experts (including our tour guides) mark as their favorite in the city, and hear the stories of these less-heralded vineyard sites.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Teutonic Wine Company, 3303 SE 20th Ave, Portland, OR 97202-2331
Teutonic is the ideal example of a wine rooted in Pinot noir but with a unique approach, inspired by German styles of wine, the geography of the Willamette Valley, rock and roll, and jazz. Like jazz, the wine here feels extemporaneous, artistic, easy to love. Barnaby Tuttle moved his Willamette Valley-based winery into the city several years ago to reduce his commute and let his wine experience the impact of the jazz bands that play in the space a few nights a week. You'll have the opportunity to try either a whites-only or reds-only flight, or let your tasting room associate select their favorites for you. Whether or not you pick your own wines to taste, you *will* be surprised.
Like many urban wineries, we love the gritty industrial neighborhood this winery is based in; we'll have the experience of driving by a few of our favorite bike tour stops, as well, so you'll see some of what makes this part of Portland so unusual -- so, as we say, "Portlandian."
{Occasionally a different winery will be substituted for Teutonic, depending on events and special requests.}
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: SE Wine Collective, 2425 SE 35th Pl, Portland, OR 97214-5811
SE Wine Collective and the Oui Bar are home to some of the best of both the Willamette Valley's wine and food. Two of the winemakers who call this collective home have been recognized among the top 10 urban wineries in the country by Food & Wine magazine, and several mentioned by Wine Enthusiast magazine as the best in the nation. Expect a Burgundian style with the attitude of a city winery; you could be in central Dijon. But you're here in Portland, with one of the city's most inventive chefs serving seasonal, local cuisine. We'll have a variety of those vegetable- and herb-rich small plates to try, as well as the opportunity to sample a flight of wine, or purchase a glass. With daily specials and a huge list, SE Wine Collective has something everyone will love.
The Oui Bar's food is so good that we suggest that our tour guests consider staying after the conclusion of the formal part of our tour for a full dinner. If your whole group is staying for dinner, we can provide transportation back to your lodging at the end of your meal.
Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes
