About this activity

This walking tour explores several fascinating sights in the city. The route begins in front of the University of Porto Rectorate, next to the Fountain of the Lions, passing by the Cordoaria Gardens towards Vitória Mirador, a place with a beautiful panoramic view of Porto. After interesting explanations about buildings, squares and local events, stop to contemplate the iconic Lello bookstore and Lisbon Square, with its beautiful Garden of Olives.

After looking at the imposing Clérigos Tower and the baroque church of the same name, continue with Porto do Avesso to Avenida dos Aliados, where you will discover the secrets behind the imposing buildings located there. Also, hear about some of the most striking episodes related to the attempts to establish the Republic in Portugal in the days of the monarchy.

Take in the details of Portuguese history painted on the azulejo tile panels of São Bento Railway Station and then walk to Sé hill, from where you can understand the origins of the city of Porto. Visit one of Portugal's oldest cathedrals and explore the streets that were important traffic routes in medieval times.

The tour continues towards Infante Square, where you will hear more about different phases of the development of the city, from romanization to the intense foreign presence, mainly English, linked to the Port wine trade. Admire the buildings located around the square, like the Church of São Francisco, Palácio da Bolsa and Ferreira Borges Market, and learn about their fascinating history.

Finally, head down to Ribeira do Porto, on the banks of the Douro River. You will be captivated by the beauty of majestic D. Luís I Bridge, with the Rabelo boats and all the life that makes the place so charming. Finish the tour with a complimentary drink – a ginjinha, typical Portuguese liquor traditionally served in a chocolate cup.
