About this activity
Situated above Lake Wakatipu and Queenstown the Remarkables are impressive and dominate the skyline.

The climbing routes in the Remarkables range offer world class alpine rock climbing in a stunning location. Climbers come from all over the world to scramble on the ridges and test their mettle on the faces of single cone.

Wanaka Rock Climbing offers guided rock climbing ascents in the scenic area above Queenstown.

Access is easy as we can drive up the ski field road in summer, this means approaches are short and only take one or two hours.

Route options are Listed Below:

Single Cone NE ridge:

This is the easiest and shortest alpine route that Wanaka Rock Climbing Guides. The NE ridge of single cone rises strikingly above Lake Alta. The climbing is easy but very enjoyable. Easy scrambling will lead to some fun pitched climbing, this leads to the slender and impressive summit block.

An easy descent down the southern gullies leads back to the approach trail.

This route is suitable to climbers with a basic knowledge of rope skills and a good leave of fitness! The NE Ridge is a great way to experience the alpine environment without having to get over committed!

Double Cone-Single Cone Traverse:

The Big classic of the Southern Lakes district, this striking ridge is on every climbers tick list. Approached by the "shadow basin" and under the telecom tower. After this long walk the climb starts off with a long ledge systems that brings you to a ridge crest and a gut wrenching view down the west face.

From here its all on to the summit, long sections of pitched climbing on a knife edge ridge and some very exciting "au cheval" moves make this climb not for the faint of heart.

The route traverses all the way over both summits of double cone and to the top of single cone before descending the southern gullies.

This alpine day is suitable for climbers with a basic understanding of rope skills and a high level of fitness. It is possible for guests who do not have climbing experience to do the traverse however we require that they do a half day of training the day before their climb!

DB Eh? Buttress:

A direct line on Double Cones North East Buttress, This route involves 5 pitches of alpine rock climbing in a fabulous position up to grade 17!

A route for the connoisseur.

The climbing starts off with a series of intricate crack and slab pitches, as you climb the buttress the pitches move up and right towards the Summit.

Approach is via the Lake Alta hike, around the lake and up to the bottom of the buttress.

This alpine day is suitable for climbers with an advanced understanding of rope and equipment skills and a high level of fitness.
