ATV and Northern Lights Tour

1 day
About this activity
The thrill of riding the all-terrain-vehicle up the mountainside, breathless with excitement, adrenalin and the spectacular view, combined with the exciting hunt for the Northern Lights– it doesn’t get any better! Join us for an hour’s adventure on Hafrafjall Mountain, then board the bus for some serious solar particle-gazing. Get ready to chase the dream. Established Gray Line Iceland partners ‘Safari Quads’ take care of part one, ensuring that participants are kitted out and properly instructed at Basecamp for an experience that is as safe as it is fun. The ATV adventure begins soon after sunset, when the land is swathed in darkness and excitement fills the air. After getting to grips with the equipment in a specially built practice/playground, the quad-bike convoy heads for the hills, to Hafrafjall mountain and beyond. Then it‘s a full hour out on the trails that cut across the beautiful, rugged Icelandic landscape, before returning to Basecamp for a relaxing cuppa. Next stop is the Gray Line Bus Terminal, where the bus is boarded for the second part of an unforgettable night. Escaping from the light pollution of Reykjavik, the tour travels away from the city, quickly entering a silent world where magical, ephemeral lights can often be found weaving their way across inky skies. Located under the "Auroral Oval", the Northern hemisphere’s most active region for this famous phenomenon, Iceland is one of the best places on earth to experience the mysterious Northern Lights. The Aurora Borealis, as it is more formally known, is potentially visible from across Iceland. In reality, viewing conditions for the Lights depend on many factors, although crisp, cold starry nights are usually a good indicator for auroral activity. As operators of Northern Lights tours in Iceland for more than 10 years, Gray Line Iceland knows a thing or two about this elusive and startling beautiful phenomenon. We are experts in deciding when and where to go in order to maximize the chances of finding and viewing the Aurora. It’s not a short tour – pick-ups for the quad-bike safari commence at 17:00 and the hunt for the Aurora can often last until midnight – but the memories are guaranteed to last even longer. Tour price is calculated with 2 people sharing the ATV. Single rider option available as an add-on at checkout. If you don’t see the Northern Lights on this tour we offer a complimentary Northern Lights Mystery tour instead.
