About this activity

Have you always wanted to see whales in their natural environment? What about some playful white-beaked dolphins and some typical birds? Don't miss this fantastic opportunity to discover Iceland's sealife from up close! Hop on board and leave Reykjavik's harbor to sail the Faxaflói bay which is home to a variety of whales, dolphins, porpoise and other marine life. The local bird life is also diverse, including such birds as the Puffin, Arctic tern, Gannet and many species of gulls.

In winter, the most common creatures to see are dolphins, humpback whales and killer whales. Minke whales are rarely seen on whale watching tours from November through March.

After the tour, you can explore the Whale Exhibition Center which enables you to witness the mysteries of the ocean. It is situated in the old Capelin-fishing vessel "Fífill," which has been transformed into an exhibition and information center on whales and seabirds.

A knowledgeable guide on tours will tell you about your trip and describe what you can see and where to look, together with an introduction and safety guide. He or she will tell you about the seabirds and nature in the Faxafloi bay. How much you see depends on the sea conditions and season, but your qualified guides are happy to try to answer all your questions.

No two whale watching trips are the same - you must be flexible and organize your trip taking sea conditions, weather and seasons into account. You rarely have to go further than 15 nautical miles from the harbor to catch a glimpse of a whale!

Warm clothing is available on board, but wearing warm clothes is highly recommended. Hot drinks and light refreshments are also provided on board. Alternatively, you can sit inside the boat in the warmth, where you can enjoy the view from large windows.
