About this activity
Your private walking tour begins at 2pm when you meet your guide in front of the tourist information center. Your first stop is at one of Ancient Rome's greatest engineering accomplishments, the Colosseum. Once inside you will stroll across the arena floor and hear the history of the bloody and violent games that took place here, learn about the making of a gladiator, and you will be given a good understanding of what these games meant to the ancient Romans.

You will then change gears and head up the Via Sacra to enter the Roman Forum and talk about the more civilized side of ancient Rome and the beautiful architecture that has inspired so many architects today. You will learn about all the main basilicas and temples. Much of this segment is dedicated to a discussion on Julius Caesar and his role in ancient Roman history. You will also learn how the Roman Empire became such a super power and why it eventually collapsed.

Atop the Capitoline Hill, known locally as "Campidoglio", Michelangelo's piazza proffers a stunning view of Piazza Venezia, the site of the Victor Emmanuel II monument and Mussolini's Palazzo. From there, stroll to Piazza Navona to view the Fountain of Four Rivers by Bernini and the Church of St. Agnes by Borromini, while hearing about the rivalry between these two artists which is supposedly evident in their architecture.

Another short stroll will take you to the beautiful Trevi Fountain where you will learn about the abundance of water and fountains in Rome, the history of Roman aqueducts, and of course you can throw your coins in and perhaps have a gelato (own expense).

Last but certainly not least, you will move on to the ancient pagan temple of the Pantheon which today is a Catholic Church. You will learn about the construction of the dome and Oculus as you meander inside this masterpiece of engineering, which has stood intact for over 2,000 years.

Your privately guided tour ends at 6pm at the Piazza della Rotonda.
