Stop At: Basilica of San Clemente, Via Labicana 95, 00184 Rome Italy

One of Rome's most famous underground sites is under the church San Clemente. In the mid-1800s, a Dominican Friar named Mullouly followed a hunch and started excavating beneath the "modern" church, which dates to the early 1100s. He was rewarded with one of the most interesting discoveries of his time: under the “modern” church was an early Christian basilica dating to approximately 350 A.D. Digging even further down, to a depth of 45 feet, Mullouly discovered another layer from the first century A.D.!

All three levels are open to the public and has something to offer: a Mithraic sanctuary, the remains of a luxury villa, humorous frescoes from slightly after the year 1000, sumptuous mosaics from the 1100s... So let’s go underground!
