About this activity
The ancient city Elea was founded probably around 540 BC by a group of travelers from the Greek city of Focea in what is now Turkey. Most people know the name of this ancient town because of the school of philosophy later born there, the ‘Scuola Eleatica’ and its most famous philosophers Parmenide and Zenone. Velia is the later modified Roman version of the Greek name.Today the Archeological park of Elea-Velia presents itself as a walking path, where visitors can go through the various sites of the ancient city, aided by educational panels explaining the highlights of the place and the history of the ruins to be found. The path starts in the ‘low’ part of the city where most of the remains of the Greek and Roman buildings can be found. Following then the old city walls that became what one can see today thanks to the 30 towers that were here built in the 4th century BC. Porta Marina is one of the city gates that brings one toward the Sacred Well or ‘Pozzo Sacro’, and continuing down the road of the Porta Rosa once can also see the remains of Adrian’s Baths or ‘Terme Adrianee’.If you love history and the joys of exploration and discovery, the Archeological Park of Elea-Velia is one of that places you would want to check out!
