The Arenal Volcano of Costa Rica is located in the district of La Fortuna, canton of San Carlos, in the province of Alajuela. It has a height of 1,670 meters above sea level. The volcano is inside the Arenal Volcano National Park. He began his last and current period of activity in 1968, on July 29 at 7:30. From that date, it constantly emits gases and vapors of water, with some explosions with emission of pyroclastic materials and sometimes strong rumblings. Because of this and its frequent activity, this volcano is the most active in Costa Rica.

El Arenal is a stratovolcano of conical shape, located about 8 km from La Fortuna. It has an area of 33 km2. It is distinguishable from considerable distance. It can be seen from different towns in the San Carlos canton such as Aguas Zarcas, Pocosol, La Fortuna, La Palmera, Cutris, Venado, Florence and even Ciudad Quesada, and cantons such as Guatuso and Los Chiles. Geologically it belongs to the Sierra de Tilarán and the nearby Chato volcano is considered as its brother.
