About this activity
Visit: Teatro Nacional Costa Rica, Second Ave. and Fifth St., San Jose Costa Rica

While in San Jose, head over to Teatro Nacional, the most important theater in Costa Rica. It opened in 1897 with the opera of Fausto de Gounod and features neoclassical facades and an eclectic style.

During your visit, take a 35-minute guided tour (in English or Spanish) in which you'll learn all about its history and visit the first and second lobby, the auditorium and the foyer. The lobbies feature marble and are built in a neoclassic Pompeian style. The foyer contains Italian and French influence and the decoration is inspired in classic Greece and Rome. Finally, see the main hall or auditorium with beautiful paintings depicting facets of 19th-century life.

The theater's main purpose is to promote art and it's become the main artistic building in the country offering plenty of entertainment for all including operas, concerts and symphonies.

Enjoy your time here and then head over to the onsite cafe to top off a great visit.
