Hunt for a bargain Radya Pustaka, museum occupies a grand old Javanese building. Dating back to 1890, it is the second-oldest museum in the whole of Indonesia and comprises a valuable collection of local and Dutch literature. including gamelan instruments, jewelled kris (traditional daggers), puppets and wayang beber (scrolls that depict wayang stories).

Danar Hadi Batik Museum, established by the owner of Danar Hadi batik company, houses an exquisite collection of antique batik. They are grouped into different styles, from those designed by Dutch women during the colonial period, to Chinese-inspired batik.

Note: Museum is closed on Mondaysand to patterns worn exclusively by the Yogyakarta and Solo royal familiesBatik is a traditional process of applying wax and dyes to fabric to achieve intricate and colourful patterns. Over time the process has evolved from a hand-drawn technique known as batik tulis, where the designs were hand-drawn onto the fabric, to batik cap, where the designs are stamped onto machine-made fabric using specially crafted copper stamps
