From here, it's a short stroll down tree-lined Huaihai Road to the Cathay Theatre, a splendid art deco cinema built in 1930. Your guide will explain how this was a favorite of Shanghainese author Eileen Chang, and about the city's role in China's 1930s Golden Age of film.

As you walk the streets of the old French Concession your guide will point out architectural highlights, and you'll see how trendy boutiques and restaurants have transformed this historic area. Admire classic old buildings and the homes of famous Shanghaiites as you amble down Sinan Road.

Next, explore the Former Residence of Sun Yat-Sen, the European-style home where the founding father of modern China lived from 1918 to 1925. From here, it's a short stroll to the charming gardens of Fuxing Park, a European-style park where locals sing, dance, and practice Chinese arts and crafts under shady sycamores.

Hop in the vehicle for your last stop, the Tianzifang complex on Taikang Road. This vibrant warren of trendy eateries, high-fashion boutiques, and galleries makes an excellent spot to soak up the cosmopolitan atmosphere of today's French Concession. |
