At the beginning of World War II, about 30,000 Jews fled Europe, settling in Shanghai. Calling themselves "Shanghailanders" the majority most settled in the neighborhood of the Hongkou District. Visit Ohel Moishe Synagogue which served as the spiritual heart of this Jewish community, and which currently houses the Museum for Jewish Refugees.
