UNESCO site. The church was built 313-323 AD and is the main sanctuary dedicated to Saint Demetrius, the patron saint of Thessaloniki. The relics of the saint are still in the curch and thousands of pilgrims visit the church every day. The preserved medieval mosaics are an excellent sample of the Orthodox Byzantine art.

The symbol of the city, The White Tower was built in Medieval times to fortify the harbour. In Ottoman times the tower use to be a notorious prison and scene of mass executions.
