About this activity
Tsukiji Market is a culinary labyrinth, attracting locals, vendors, restaurant owners, and tourists alike. Our approach goes a bit more of the beaten track, as we visit areas of the market that many tourists don’t frequent. Navigate the market with expert in Japanese cuisine, and long term Tokyo resident for this small group (6 people max) walking tour. Our market walk will culminate in an authentic sit-down lunch where we will continue our gastronomic discussion. The walking tour will begin with some background as to how this quaint area of the city emerged into one of the largest markets in the world. As we work our way further into the market, our guide will explain how different ingredients and kitchen tools are used to create some of the dishes we’ll see later in the tour. We’ll also learn about what makes Japanese food unique, and how it relates to concepts such as geography and the seasons. Japanese food is an experience that truly indulges all of the senses. Along the way, we will mingle with local vendors and sample delicacies such as rice balls, sashimi, pickled produce (eggplant and plums to name a few), miso, pomegranate vinegar, meat dumplings, and more. Our final hour together will be spent at a local sit down restaurant, where we’ll continue the discussion over dishes such as raw fish served over bowls of rice (kaisendon), or tempura, or sushi. After a delicious walking tour of Tokyo’s Tsukiji outer market, we’ll leave with all five senses satisfied and with a better understanding of the unique role that cuisine plays in Japanese culture.
