This ancient town a hop north from Tokyo is home to one of the country’s most impressive temples, as well as countless natural features including waterfalls, lakes and natural hot springs. For a unique view of Japan that can’t be found in the capital, let us take you exploring Nikkō, starting with Toshogu Shrine...
Dating back to the 1600s, this incredibly ornate shrine is the final resting place to Tokugawa Ieyasu, one of the country’s most influential rulers. What was once a modest shrine was transformed into one of Japan’s most impressive religious sites by Ieyasu’s grandchildren. The architecture and detailed statues at this peaceful temple are truly a sight to behold.
